Beyond Drill to Real Skills

Most parents know that a child who only memorizes math facts without really understanding math will find progressively complex concepts more and more difficult to understand. But what they erroneously think is that such problems arise about the time a child is memorizing the multiplication table. Not so. Unlike reading, an integral skill that is tightly woven throughout our entire day, math tends to be a more sporadic subject, essential when you need it and then easily set aside. That is why it is imperative that a child is able to reason his way through any mathematical problem.

Award-winning Mathematical Reasoning is a great place to start. With 293 pages of quick, straightforward problems to build mathematical reasoning skills in second-grade students, these highly motivational activities will take your child beyond mere drill work by using step-by-step, discussion-based problem solving. Concepts spiral gradually so that children do not forget as they go. The concepts are written to the standards of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Non-reproducible.

Topics/activities include Action, Addition, Age, Analyze Data, Bar Graph, Calendar, Capacity, Circle Graph, Coins, Congruence, Coordinates, Count, Denominator, Division, Estimate, Expanded Notation (Place Value), Fraction, Hundreds, Inequalities, Language, Length, Likelihood, Line Graph, Manipulative, Match, Money, More Than 2 Addends, Multiplication, Number Line, Odd/Even, Ones, Order, Order of Operation, Pattern, Place Value (Expanded Notation), Polygon, Probability, Real World Problem, Regrouping (Borrowing and Carrying), Rounding, Ruler, Shapes, Survey, Symmetry, Table, Tens, Thermometer, Time, Variable, Weight, Whole Numbers.
Answer guide included in the back of the book.

I really like this curriculum.

For us, this curriculum is a good balance of workbook and critical thinking. We like it’s variety and spiraling topics, which include fun puzzles. It is quick and easy to implement.

The concepts in this book are great. The pages are colorful and keep it fun. BUT we have found my daughter does better with mastering concepts before moving on. This workbook tends to jump around too much for her. She prefers to use math U-See. I think it comes down to what your learner would prefer! Both great options.

Mathematical Reasoning Level C

Mathematical Reasoning is my favorite lesson. It is lots of fun and I love the different kinds of lessons. Except the "Explain Your Reasoning." I don't like to write sentences in math. But the rest of it is great!

My kids love it!

I have been looking at the Mathematical Reasoning books for a few years now and was never sure if they would be 'enough' as a stand alone curriculum, so I always chose something else as our core math program. Finally I decided that I was going to give this a try since I kept coming back to it. I purchased Level C for my 2nd grader and so far we are having a lot of fun with it! He uses Saxon math 3 as his core math curriculum, so for now, Mathematical Reasoning is a great supplement or alternative when we don't want to do his normal math lesson. These books do not have a LOT of instruction on new concepts, so for some kids these may be better as extra practice or as a 'fun workbook'. He is happy to do 4-6 pages in the workbook even on days when we do his other math program. Overall, very happy with my decision to purchase this workbook for my son!

Awesome Math

We have used Mathematical Reasoning since Kindergarten and absolutely love it. My daughter loves the colorful pages and easy to understand instructions. I love that the types of math are alternated throughout the book so it's not overly repetitive. This series has a lot of educational math games/puzzles too which makes her math extra exciting!
