Mosdos Press Literature - Coral - 5th Grade
Fifth graders are ready for more than simple story questions. They're ready to explore motives, wrestle with choices, recognize great writing, and think more deeply about what they read. Mosdos Press Literature provides that next step through carefully selected stories, poetry, essays, drama, and literary study.
The Coral level, designed for fifth grade, features 26 short stories, 39 poems, 9 nonfiction essays, 2 plays, and a complete novel. With more than 600 pages of literature, students encounter a wide variety of genres, writing styles, and perspectives while building the skills needed for deeper literary analysis. Authors such as Cynthia Rylant, Laura Ingalls Wilder, and Isaac Asimov appear alongside favorite poets including Shel Silverstein and Edna St. Vincent Millay, creating a collection that is both engaging and academically rich.
Each selection begins with a brief literary focus that introduces concepts such as character motivation, figurative language, plot development, symbolism, or moral dilemmas before students encounter them in context. These short introductions help students move beyond simply understanding what happened in a story and begin thinking about why it matters.
The full-color Student Reader serves as the foundation of the program. Vocabulary support appears directly alongside the text, and each selection is followed by comprehension questions, critical-thinking exercises, and optional enrichment activities. Whether your child enjoys discussion, writing, memorization, or creative projects, the Reader provides multiple ways to engage with the literature.
The consumable Student Activity Workbook reinforces vocabulary, comprehension, written expression, and literary analysis through lessons that directly correspond to the Reader. As students progress through the Coral level, assignments encourage greater independence while continuing to strengthen reading and thinking skills.
The Teacher's Edition provides extensive support without feeling overwhelming. Every page of the Student Reader is reproduced alongside teaching notes, literary explanations, discussion guidance, and answer keys. Whether you're new to homeschooling or have taught literature for years, you'll have the tools needed to guide meaningful conversations and deepen understanding.
One of Mosdos Press Literature's greatest strengths is its thoughtful selection of reading material. The stories are engaging, the themes are worthwhile, and the discussions they inspire feel meaningful rather than manufactured. Instead of relying on questionable content to generate interest, Mosdos uses strong storytelling and memorable ideas to help students develop discernment, empathy, and critical-thinking skills.
For families seeking a literature program that combines vocabulary development, reading comprehension, literary analysis, and positive character themes, Mosdos Press Literature offers a balanced approach that is both academically rigorous and genuinely enjoyable to teach. By the end of the year, your child won't simply have read a collection of stories—he'll have learned how to think more deeply about them.

How to Use Mosdos Coral
- Complete one subsection each week. Most weeks begin with a Lesson in Literature and continue through the assigned reading until the next lesson appears. This pace allows the program to fit comfortably into a 36-week school year.
- After the reading, complete the corresponding workbook pages to reinforce vocabulary, comprehension, and literary concepts. If your student is already using a separate writing program, feel free to be selective with the additional writing assignments.
- Work through the Studying the Selection questions together after each reading. Many families find these discussions work best orally, encouraging deeper thinking and richer conversations without adding unnecessary written work.
- During the poetry unit, use the Think About It writing activities in place of workbook assignments. These exercises help students engage more deeply with the poems while continuing to develop written expression.
- Each unit concludes with optional Wrap-Up activities that may include projects, poetry, crafts, or other creative extensions. Use them when time allows, or skip them without concern. The core instruction remains in the reading, discussion, and workbook activities.
- Unit 3 contains one additional lesson. To stay on a 36-week schedule, simply complete subsections 3 and 4 during the same week.
- If you purchased a Timberdoodle curriculum kit, you'll find a ready-to-use 36-week schedule in your Handbook. Follow it as written or adjust it to fit your family's pace.
Mosdos Coral works best when literature becomes a conversation rather than an assignment. The goal is not simply to finish the readings, but to help your child understand characters, recognize important ideas, appreciate good writing, and think more deeply about what he reads.

We enjoyed this curriculum, used for our first year homeschooling, 5th grade. The stories were great, workbook pages and questions were also great. My ADHD and dyslexic son enjoyed this.

Like all of Timberdoodle's curriculum choices for the kits, I am very impressed with Mosdos Press Literature. I homeschooled my older children about 8 years ago before recently beginning again, but I had not heard of this program before being introduced to it here. My daughter has been working her way through the Coral level. The quality of literature that she is reading in fifth grade is impressive. It's not just read the story and walk away, but she is reading through a lens of noticing theme, dialogue, characters, or other literary devices that the book's authors want students to focus on. We do most of the activities in the workbook, but enjoy the flexibility to skip or do something else with the story as the skills are practiced throughout the workbook. Great curriculum!

Great for Kids Who Love Reading
Josslin S.
This is our third year using Mosdos Press Literature. My daughter (who LOVES to read), really enjoys the stories. They are wholesome and teach great life lessons. I love how each unit focuses on different literature elements such as setting, character, plot and theme. There are also great plays and poems throughout the book. I will say that the teacher's manual is a bit overwhelming. I read through it and pick and choose the aspects I want to highlight with my daughter. Also, this curriculum would have been a bit tough for my son who is not an avid reader. For him, we love All About Reading. If you have a child that really enjoys reading, I think Mosdos is a great choice!

Great Stories and Critical Thinking
Kaitlyn R.
My daughter has been using this reading comprehension form of literature for the past two years and she has gotten so much out of it from the vocabulary, stories (fiction and non-fiction) and it has helped to improve her critical thinking as well.

Great Reading Curriculum

This curriculum is great! It is well worth the price! It has a TON of stuff to do/stay busy with, but you can easily pick and choose what works best for your child. The workbooks have a lot of graphic organizers, and I love the easy breakdown for summarizing the stories. The teacher's guide is very helpful. It gives you more details than you realize you need. We are continuing with the Mosdos Press Literature for our homeschool family this coming year.

Not sure
Amanda F.
The stories and concepts seem good but its over complicated and drags out, what can be done in 1-3 lessons is like 9-10.. I like to the point and this seems to have alot of busy work. Its also a big text book so it feels alot like "school" and thats not really what we were going for. The teachers guide is very hard to follow.

Great Product

Engaging stories and easy to follow corresponding workbook pages. We use this as a work on your own activity and then review together once complete. The stories are varied and illustrations are colorful and fun.
