What's in the Sixth-Grade Kit
Getting ready to homeschool 6th grade? Sixth grade is the bridge into middle school, and more of the day’s work shifts to your student. This year’s kit includes a marble-powered computer that introduces binary logic as part of the STEM work. Math covers decimals, percents, and ratios. Your child builds typing skills, works through formal logic and fallacy detection, and reads literature that requires more analysis. In the classic kits, social studies focuses on U.S. government and civics, while nonreligious kits cover ancient civilizations. Science goes deeper into human anatomy, with puzzles and reference books alongside the core curriculum.
Every kit includes our online Scheduler, which lays out each day’s work for you. Classic and nonreligious kits differ in history and social studies. Compare tiers below to see what’s included, and use the customizer to swap anything that isn’t the right fit.

Yes. Families across the country buy Timberdoodle kits with state scholarships, education savings accounts (ESAs), and charter school funds—and most families who buy a full year of curriculum from us pay nothing out of pocket. See which programs we work with and how to order with yours.
Do I order here, or through my program's marketplace?
That depends on your program. Some let you shop right here on timberdoodle.com and check out with your program's payment method. Others handle ordering inside their own marketplace, where you search for Timberdoodle and place the order there. The guide above walks through each one. If you're not sure which yours is, email us at hello@timberdoodle.com and we'll tell you.
Will I be charged anything myself?
No. When your program orders directly, your program is billed—not you. If you see a balance-due line on a program order, that's the amount your program pays, not something you owe.
My award won't cover a whole kit. What then?
Kits come in three levels—Basic, Complete, and Elite—so there's usually a version that fits your award. Many programs also allow customizing a kit, which lets you swap or drop items before you order. Individual items work too, if you'd rather fill the gaps in what you already own.
Which edition can I use—Classic or Nonreligious?
Your program's rules decide. Most funding programs require non-religious materials, and that's exactly what the Nonreligious edition is: the same kit, built without faith-based materials. Classic is there for families whose program allows it, or who are buying with their own funds.
Find answers to the most frequently asked questions about this product below:
We asked parents who used our 6th Grade Kit how long their student spent on "school,” and they estimated that their students spent 2-5 hours a day on their kit, working 4-5 days a week. That variation is likely to be impacted by how in-depth you take your child's studies, what your child's learning approach is, how distractible he is, and much more.
Mostly, yes. Sixth grade is a natural time to build independence. The Scheduler shows what’s next each day, and the math program teaches each new concept by video, so many sixth graders handle much of their day on their own. You’ll still want to check in on writing, talk through the reading, and look over math as you go.
Math (decimals, percents, and ratios), literature and writing, spelling, typing, formal logic, and science with a focus on human anatomy. Classic kits study U.S. government and civics, while nonreligious kits cover ancient civilizations. For STEM, Turing Tumble is a marble-powered computer that teaches binary logic. The kit chart on this page shows exactly what’s in each kit level.
Use the customizer to swap any item before you check out. If your sixth grader needs 5th grade math or is ready for 7th grade language arts, just swap those pieces so the kit matches where your child really is.
One subject, and only in the larger kits. At the Basic level the Classic and Nonreligious kits hold exactly the same items. At Complete and Elite, history is the one swap: Classic uses Uncle Sam and You, and Nonreligious uses Discover Social Studies 6.
The Handbooks differ too. The Classic Handbook's suggested reading list includes Christian titles, and wherever the materials differ, each Handbook's instructions are written for the materials in its own kit.
We flag these differences carefully. We serve charter school families who aren't permitted to buy materials containing religious content, so we label anything that carries any, even a reading list tucked inside a handbook. We'd rather over-label than let a family order something their program isn't allowed to buy.
You'll also notice there's no Bible course in the kit. That's deliberate. We believe Bible study is too important to become one more subject to check off. What your family studies should flex with your children's ages, what they're wrestling with, and what your church is walking through this year, and a boxed Bible curriculum can't do that.
Most of it, yes. The games, building sets, readers, and hands-on tools are made to last, so they can go back on the shelf for the next child. What gets used up is the workbooks and some of the craft supplies: in this kit, things like the Math-U-See Zeta workbook and test book, the Mosdos Pearl workbook, and The Fallacy Detective workbook.
You don't have to work out that list yourself. The 6th Grade Additional Student Kit, just below Add to Cart, is exactly the used-up part, and it comes in Basic, Complete, and Elite to match the kit you bought.
One more thing at this level: the Elite kit includes Photography 4 Teens and the CompuScholar Tech Essentials course, which are one login per student, so the Elite Additional Student Kit includes those too.
Not unless you customized your kit to include one. Every Basic, Complete and Elite Curriculum Kit comes with the Math-U-See student workbook and test book, the hands-on pieces for that level, and a year of Math-U-See's online plan, which is where you'll find the lesson videos and the full instructor manual.
Your access code for the online plan is printed on a card packed in your box, often tucked inside the manipulatives box or wrapped with the books. Your year starts when you enter the code, not when you buy it. Your Scheduler code is a different one.
Our free placement test at tests.timberdoodle.com takes about 15 minutes. Your child does two short activities, reading and math, on screen or on paper, and you answer a few questions about spelling, language arts and thinking skills. Your child never sees a score, and you can stop and come back anytime. At the end, you'll see a Complete Curriculum Kit with your child's level already set in each subject.
When you customize your kit, each subject has its own grade level setting, so reading can sit at one level and math at another.
Between two levels? Some families start a little hard and ease in, and others start a little easy and race through. We've seen both work well, so go with what suits your child.
Still not sure? Email hello@timberdoodle.com with what your child is working on now, and we'll help you choose.

Great kit, wonderful core materials. Would like an option to have spelling and more in complete cursive. STEM activities are advanced and thrilling. Living rural and running a farm/ranch we love the books for all the core subjects; bookwork makes great tractor companions.

Love the Timberdoodle curriculums. This most recent one relies too heavily on digital content for our preference. All in all, still a great product!

It works for us!
Melanie D.
I was using a workbook curriculum set for my son with a few supplements from Timberdoodle until last year, when we switched to Timberdoodle for everything except English. This year we got the whole curriculum kit. I find that as my kids get older, they need more that the workbook set could provide. I love the fact that I can customize the curriculum kit for our needs and budget. For 6th grade we are doing Math U See, Spelling U See, Mosdos Pearl, Uncle Sam and You, Science in the Industrial Age, and A Reason for Handwriting. His favorite and mine is Uncle Sam and You. I love all the Notgrass history curriculum and so do both of my kids. And I love the customizable element of the kits. I can get exactly what I need and nothing that I don’t (or that I can’t afford).

Great kit!
Ryan T.
I love that we are able to customize these kits! I chose to include most of the suggestions, but I switched out math and some of the game suggestions. I am highly impressed with this kit and look forward to using it this school year with my 6th grader. He’s never been this excited to start homeschooling!

Timberdoodle for the win!
Nikki W.
My sons second time using Timberdoodle and he absolutely loves it. He struggles at times with learning but always says how timberdoodle actually keeps him interested and the material is easier for his to grasp. We have enjoyed it as a family and are always recommending it to others shopping for curriculum.

Great Curriculum

We love all the fun things that come with the curriculum kit, and it's really helpful that we can customize the kit to suit our child.

Great company
Miranda
The kit customized lets you choose which curriculum you need and don’t need. The online customizer for the schedule- I wish I could choose a two or three day week, but alas, it only works for a 5 day week.

This is Fantastic
Tricia J.
I am starting to homeschool this year and jumped on with the elite kit for 6th grade. My daughter insisted on starting "school" as soon as we received it. It has been really wonderful. There are a lot of fun things for her to do to break up the harder things. She hasn't liked school the last few years, but now wakes up every morning ready to go! I mainly bought this because it looked fun and like something I would have loved as a kid. Secondly, because I am a homesteader with other little children and don't have time to put together different curriculums. Thank you Timberdoodle!
