How to Use Primary Mathematics 5

- Use the Home Instructor Guide regularly. It provides lesson support, teaching notes, pacing suggestions, materials lists, visual aids, and answer keys so you can spend more time teaching and less time planning.
- Expect students to spend more time connecting concepts across lessons. Fifth-grade math increasingly combines multiple skills within the same problem rather than teaching concepts in isolation.
- Encourage your child to regularly explain strategies. Many problems can be solved in multiple ways, and Grade 5 is where students begin making more intentional decisions about which methods work best.

As you know, several older versions of the very popular Singapore Math exist. The good news is that you can seamlessly switch from any other version to Primary Mathematics 2022. Primary Mathematics 2022 can be used with students of all abilities, but it is perfect for students who struggle with math. Its scope, pace, and review make it a much more manageable curriculum. Primary Mathematics 2022 covers math topics taught in U.S. public schools, so transitioning to any other U.S. curriculum should be straightforward.
Unlike the other tests, the placement tests for Primary Mathematics 2022 are set up to see if a student is ready to enter that grade level. So, for example, if a student successfully completes the 2A test, then they are likely ready, to begin with the material in 2A and should also take the 2B placement test to see if they are ready to begin with that material. Singapore Math programs are designed for use in a school setting, and in that context, you would undoubtedly need testing to track which of your 20-30 students were on track and which needed extra help. However, in the context of homeschooling, this becomes very obvious as you go through the work with your student. In addition, most families do not need either the extra work of testing or the cost of buying a test for their children in primary mathematics. Overtesting can build tedium and resentment for both the gifted student who wants to keep learning and the student who sees himself as not liking math and is now resigned to completing the same set of problems yet again. This math course is comprehensive and challenging, and we believe that students will be well-prepared for future levels without taking additional tests. Takes some getting used to

I haven't used this program before and it's taken a couple of weeks to settle into a routine of using this program. My son tested at a 5th grade level so we purchased this set to do some refresher work and build on skills that he was developing in 7th grade. So far, he hasn't found the manipulatives helpful but I think that's related to the length of time it adds to a lesson. My son really like the appearance of the workbook (lots of color, "not boring") which helps keep him engaged in lessons. Having the teacher guide really helps me to learn the method of teaching concepts rather than defaulting to the methods that I learned in the 90's. =)

Excellent math curriculum

I’ve tried many math curriculums and Singapore is by far my favorite! I love that the lessons are short, to the point, and engaging. The pages are colorful as an added bonus. I also like that manipulatives are included.
