What's in the Third-Grade Kit
This is the year your child begins working more independently. He'll read full literature selections, start cursive handwriting, and learn multiplication.History continues into the early modern era, science explores all five areas of study, and thinking skills move into more complex problem-solving with logic puzzles, strategy games, and multi-step challenges. STEM this year includes a marble-run engineering set that often stays out and gets rebuilt again and again.
Classic and nonreligious kits include the same materials at this level. Compare tiers below to see what’s included, and use the customizer to swap anything that isn’t the right fit.
3 Top Features of our Third-Grade Curriculum Kits

Your side-by-side chart shows every item in this grade and whether it's in the Basic, Complete, or Elite kit.

We asked parents who used our 3rd Grade Kit how long their student spent on "school,” and they estimated that their students spent 2-4 hours a day on their kit, working 4-5 days a week. That variation is likely to be impacted by how in-depth you take your child's studies, what your child's learning approach is, how distractible he is, and much more.
Not sure if it’s time to move up? Totally normal!
A great place to start is with our Placement Tests. We have complete tests for younger kiddos to show exactly where they are. For older students, you’ll want to focus on the math and language arts sections to get a good feel for their readiness.
Kids are usually ready to jump into the next kit—with maybe a few exceptions. If your child is heading into 3rd grade but places into 2nd-grade math, no problem! You might want to grab the 3rd-grade kit and simply swap out the math.
If a subject didn’t stick last year, now’s your chance to figure out why.
- Maybe your child just missed a few concepts (hello, summer review!).
- Maybe the curriculum didn’t click.
- Maybe math just isn’t his jam (yet).
- Or maybe he needs a little extra support—and that’s okay!
One of the best things about homeschooling? You’re not locked into a one-size-fits-all timeline. You can customize learning to fit your child and help them succeed at their own pace.

We pick every item in this kit against one standard: is it the best thing we can find for a child this age? At this grade level, the materials that won that test don't carry religious content either way — so the Classic and Nonreligious kits contain the same items. The single difference is the handbook, where the Classic edition's suggested reading list includes Christian titles.
We flag that difference carefully. We serve charter school families who aren't permitted to buy materials containing religious content, so we label anything that carries any — even a reading list tucked inside a handbook. We'd rather over-label than let a family order something their program isn't allowed to buy.
You'll also notice there's no Bible course in the kit. That's deliberate. We believe Bible study is too important to become one more subject to check off — what your family studies should flex with your children's ages, what they're wrestling with, and what your church is walking through this year. A boxed Bible curriculum can't do that. We've written more about how we think about it here: The Bible: It's Not Just Curriculum.
Nope—and that's totally normal!
Here's the deal: Accreditation is for schools, not curriculum. Your local school district might be accredited, but their textbooks aren't. Accreditation looks at things like teacher degrees and classroom hours, not the books or materials being used. And since Timberdoodle kits aren't a school—they're a collection of awesome learning tools—there's nothing to accredit.
If you see a homeschool program claiming to be "accredited," just remember: it's the school that's accredited, not the curriculum.
And don't worry—no state requires homeschool curriculum to be accredited. (Phew!)
What you really want to know is: "Will Timberdoodle meet my state's homeschool requirements?" In most cases, the answer is yes—we meet or beat what's needed! However, every state's rules are a little different, so we recommend checking yours. (We even have a quick cheat sheet to help!)
Still scratching your head? Reach out—we'd love to help you figure it out!

So far the language arts Mosdos Press Literature is great. I love that it comes with the textbook, teacher book and workbook. We are using Beast Academy for math (which my daughter loves!) so removed what was included. We did keep the multiplication string keys, such a fun tool. I am not a fan of the Story of the World. It's a very hard read in such a small book- seems dumbed down and emotional. Very much not a text book. The Real Science was kind of a let down too. It just seems like cheap publishing. Hard to look at. I'm just very glad something like this exists to get a jump start into homeschooling.

Timberdoodle is always a winner

We have just began an exciting new journey of a school year using this splendid curriculum. It has allow my child to learn language arts from all angles, really helping him to master English for his age. Math U See’s blocks are the most effective way to teach just about any math concept. The methods used in the curriculum to promote divergent thinking are amazing! History and Science are a bit complex, but if you give your child a chance to digest it and break it down into simpler concepts for them, they can digest it. There is enough hands on items to keep them occupied between complex lessons. After all my research, Timberdoodle is the best all around curriculum provider on the market.

A Great Choice!

I am thrilled with our decision to order a Timberdoodle (custom) curriculum set for our child. We customized a third grade set to match his abilities in each core subject and are so pleased with all of the great art projects, the scheduler, the games, and puzzles! I’ve been homeschooling (and loving it!) for four years already and I was hesitant about a “big box” curriculum because it seemed like mostly new homeschoolers were opting for it. The ability to customize is GREAT and we added more books from our home library; everything has been wonderful for us. So one month in, I ordered another one of my children a custom Timberdoodle curriculum box. We are having a great time so far!

Customizing is Amazing!

Finding Timberdoodle was a game changer for our homeschooling! I am so grateful that they have already done the research to find the best curriculum because finding curriculum that works is so overwhelming and time consuming! I love being able to find everything I need all in one place, and being able to change or delete things that I need or don't need! I appreciate it being non-religious so that we can still get it through our charter-like program! The handbook and scheduler are amazing and I am just so glad that I happened upon Timberdoodle and their customizable curriculum kits! Thank you!

Great Curriculum

We always enjoy our Timberdoodle kits. They have such high quality items in them and the ability to customize them makes them perfect for our homeschool classroom. This allows us to meet our child where they are at and level up or down where necessary. It comes with the amazing handbook and access to the scheduler as well. This makes the use of the products included in the kits very easy for the instructor. Thank you for offering top of the line quality products year after year.

great elite kit, worth the money
Bina
We love that there is a customization option for the kits. At first, homeschooling intimidated us as a family so we weren't sure where to go. I saw Timberdoodle and used their kits as recommendations for birthday gifts. When we decided to homeschool, we knew we would go with them. We have purchased six elite kits from them and have not been disappointed at all. We weren't sure if we should spend this much on curriculum or that it would be too many works but we spread it out and school year round. Our kiddos favorite work is the 3d globe, Zentangle, and doodle adventures.
