What's in the Second-Grade Kit
Reading shifts this year — from learning to read to reading to learn. Your child will tackle chapter books. If you are looking for an engaging curriculum for 2nd-graders, our packages help your child read more independently and build vocabulary through practice and word play.
Math moves into multi-digit addition and subtraction. History picks up with the medieval world, science explores the animal kingdom, and thinking skills get more layered with spatial reasoning and logic challenges. This comprehensive 2nd-grade curriculum kit also includes art projects that go far beyond coloring — from painting to clay to Renaissance art history.
Classic and nonreligious kits include the same materials at this grade — compare tiers below to see what's in each, and use the customizer to swap anything that isn't the right fit.
3 Top Features of our Second-Grade Curriculum Kits
- Well-rounded curriculum: Our curriculum kits include a variety of resources that meet or exceed most state standards
- Hands-on learning: Each Second-Grade kit includes a variety of material and hands-on activities that help students learn in a fun and engaging way
- Flexibility: Every kit can be customized to meet the needs of individual students.

Your side-by-side chart shows every item in this grade and whether it's in the Basic, Complete, or Elite kit.
Paying with ESA, Scholarship, or Charter Funds
Can I use ESA, scholarship, or charter funds for this kit?Yes. Families across the country buy Timberdoodle kits with state scholarships, education savings accounts (ESAs), and charter school funds—and most families who buy a full year of curriculum from us pay nothing out of pocket. See which programs we work with and how to order with yours.
Do I order here, or through my program's marketplace?
That depends on your program. Some let you shop right here on timberdoodle.com and check out with your program's payment method. Others handle ordering inside their own marketplace, where you search for Timberdoodle and place the order there. The guide above walks through each one. If you're not sure which yours is, email us at mail@timberdoodle.com and we'll tell you.
Will I be charged anything myself?
No. When your program orders directly, your program is billed—not you. If you see a balance-due line on a program order, that's the amount your program pays, not something you owe.
My award won't cover a whole kit. What then?
Kits come in three levels—Basic, Complete, and Elite—so there's usually a version that fits your award. Many programs also allow customizing a kit, which lets you swap or drop items before you order. Individual items work too, if you'd rather fill the gaps in what you already own.
Which edition can I use—Classic or Nonreligious?
Your program's rules decide. Most funding programs require non-religious materials, and that's exactly what the Nonreligious edition is: the same kit, built without faith-based materials. Classic is there for families whose program allows it, or who are buying with their own funds.

Each Kit Tier includes specific subjects and courses, starting from the minimum required. Check out the comparisons below to see which Kit Tier is right for you.

A well-rounded 2nd-grade curriculum focuses on developing independent reading habits, advanced phonics, and multi-digit math concepts. Timberdoodle's 2nd-grade homeschool curriculum expands on these basics by incorporating historical studies of the medieval world, animal biology, spatial logic puzzles, and foundational art appreciation.
Basic Kits focus strictly on core subjects—perfect if you want a minimalist approach or want to add your own electives. Complete Kits add essential enrichment, including our signature thinking skills, history, and introductory STEM components. Elite Kits offer the ultimate, stress-free 2nd-grade homeschool curriculum experience, packed with extra hands-on building tools, comprehensive art projects, and deep-dive learning materials to keep high-energy second graders fully engaged.
We pick every item in this kit against one standard: is it the best thing we can find for a child this age? At this grade level, the materials that won that test don't carry religious content either way — so the Classic and Nonreligious kits contain the same items. The single difference is the handbook, where the Classic edition's suggested reading list includes Christian titles.
We flag that difference carefully. We serve charter school families who aren't permitted to buy materials containing religious content, so we label anything that carries any — even a reading list tucked inside a handbook. We'd rather over-label than let a family order something their program isn't allowed to buy.
You'll also notice there's no Bible course in the kit. That's deliberate. We believe Bible study is too important to become one more subject to check off — what your family studies should flex with your children's ages, what they're wrestling with, and what your church is walking through this year. A boxed Bible curriculum can't do that. We've written more about how we think about it here: The Bible: It's Not Just Curriculum.
We asked parents who used our 2nd Grade Kit how long their student spent on "school,” and they estimated that their students spent 1-4 hours a day on their kit, working 4-5 days a week. That variation is likely to be impacted by how in-depth you take your child's studies, what your child's learning approach is, how distractible he is, and much more.
Not sure if it’s time to move up? Totally normal!
A great place to start is with our Placement Tests. We have complete tests for younger kiddos to show exactly where they are. For older students, you’ll want to focus on the math and language arts sections to get a good feel for their readiness.
Kids are usually ready to jump into the next kit—with maybe a few exceptions. If your child is heading into 3rd grade but places into 2nd-grade math, no problem! You might want to grab the 3rd-grade kit and simply swap out the math.
If a subject didn’t stick last year, now’s your chance to figure out why.
- Maybe your child just missed a few concepts (hello, summer review!).
- Maybe the curriculum didn’t click.
- Maybe math just isn’t his jam (yet).
- Or maybe he needs a little extra support—and that’s okay!
One of the best things about homeschooling? You’re not locked into a one-size-fits-all timeline. You can customize learning to fit your child and help them succeed at their own pace.
Ready to start exploring? We’re here to help every step of the way!
Nope—and that's totally normal!
Here's the deal: Accreditation is for schools, not curriculum. Your local school district might be accredited, but their textbooks aren't. Accreditation looks at things like teacher degrees and classroom hours, not the books or materials being used. And since Timberdoodle kits aren't a school—they're a collection of awesome learning tools—there's nothing to accredit.
If you see a homeschool program claiming to be "accredited," just remember: it's the school that's accredited, not the curriculum.
And don't worry—no state requires homeschool curriculum to be accredited. (Phew!)
What you really want to know is: "Will Timberdoodle meet my state's homeschool requirements?" In most cases, the answer is yes—we meet or beat what's needed! However, every state's rules are a little different, so we recommend checking yours. (We even have a quick cheat sheet to help!)
Still scratching your head? Reach out—we'd love to help you figure it out!
We've been honored with more than 40 awards from top homeschooling resources over the years. We're talking about the Practical Homeschooling Reader Awards, The Old Schoolhouse Excellence in Education Awards, and Cathy Duffy's Top Picks. Our Elementary Curriculum, High School Curriculum, Kindergarten, Middle School Curriculum, and Preschool/Readiness kits have all earned top awards. We've also been recognized for our Boxed Curriculum and even for being Most Unique. These awards are a testament to how much our customers love our kits! Winning them means receiving very high satisfaction ratings from YOU, our amazing homeschooling families. It truly shows that the time and effort we put into creating comprehensive and engaging curriculum pays off!

My son absolutely enjoyed this second-grade curriculum kit! We only supplemented one core independently—Singapore Math Dimensions—as my son didn’t find Beta challenging enough. RS4K was his absolute favorite, and I thoroughly enjoyed it too. Another favorite was Spelling You See. He loves animals, so the storytelling made the exercises so easy and engaging for him. We didn’t realize we could customize the box, so we purchased Story of the World Volume 1 separately, as we wanted to start from the beginning. We plan to use Volume 2 next year. So many parts of this kit were great: the art (HIGASFY), puzzles, games, and emotional intelligence. All in all, we highly recommend this kit, even though we haven’t even opened some of the boxes. There was so much included that we are still using some of the materials into our second year of homeschooling. It was a great, well-rounded box!

Love the kit!
Steph H.
When we moved over the summer, I found myself homeschooling again, but this time all 5 of our kids would be involved. I knew I needed something to help me plan our school year, and I am so glad I found these kits. We purchased the grade 2 elite kit. It was easy to customize. The resources included in the kit are really top of the line, I have used several of them before, such as All About Reading, MathUSee, and Spelling You See. The handbook makes planning our weekly schedule so much easier. The learning games (Smart Cookies and Smart Dog) are super engaging and my son has enjoyed working with the Clay Play kit. This kit is amazing and I will be ordering the grade 3 kit for next school year!

Round 2!
Mabilia R.
This is my second time ordering a customized 2nd grade curriculum kit. I like that I can build a kit and leave off what I already have from my first kid. I appreciate the changes in art recommendations and the options of curriculum for each subject. I keep coming back to Timberdoodle because it's helpful to have a one stop shop and I don't find much price difference when I look at buying curriculum pieces directly from the publishing sources. And the scheduler is super helpful.

We love the Curriculum Sets
Rachelle
We love this curriculum set. I do wish there were more video options for science and history. We customized our kit. We used the elite kit. We love the variety throughout the school year. We will definitely be purchasing the 3rd grade curriculum!
