What's in the Third-Grade Kit
This is the year your child begins working more independently. He'll read full literature selections, start cursive handwriting, and learn multiplication.History continues into the early modern era, science explores all five areas of study, and thinking skills move into more complex problem-solving with logic puzzles, strategy games, and multi-step challenges. STEM this year includes a marble-run engineering set that often stays out and gets rebuilt again and again.
Classic and nonreligious kits include the same materials at this level. Compare tiers below to see what’s included, and use the customizer to swap anything that isn’t the right fit.

Read the ReviewYes. Families across the country buy Timberdoodle kits with state scholarships, education savings accounts (ESAs), and charter school funds—and most families who buy a full year of curriculum from us pay nothing out of pocket. See which programs we work with and how to order with yours.
Do I order here, or through my program's marketplace?
That depends on your program. Some let you shop right here on timberdoodle.com and check out with your program's payment method. Others handle ordering inside their own marketplace, where you search for Timberdoodle and place the order there. The guide above walks through each one. If you're not sure which yours is, email us at hello@timberdoodle.com and we'll tell you.
Will I be charged anything myself?
No. When your program orders directly, your program is billed—not you. If you see a balance-due line on a program order, that's the amount your program pays, not something you owe.
My award won't cover a whole kit. What then?
Kits come in three levels—Basic, Complete, and Elite—so there's usually a version that fits your award. Many programs also allow customizing a kit, which lets you swap or drop items before you order. Individual items work too, if you'd rather fill the gaps in what you already own.
Which edition can I use—Classic or Nonreligious?
Your program's rules decide. Most funding programs require non-religious materials, and that's exactly what the Nonreligious edition is: the same kit, built without faith-based materials. Classic is there for families whose program allows it, or who are buying with their own funds.
Find answers to the most frequently asked questions about this product below:
We asked parents who used our 3rd Grade Kit how long their student spent on "school,” and they estimated that their students spent 2-4 hours a day on their kit, working 4-5 days a week. That variation is likely to be impacted by how in-depth you take your child's studies, what your child's learning approach is, how distractible he is, and much more.
Yes! Every kit includes our signature Timberdoodle multi-page scheduler. Instead of forcing you into a rigid daily matrix, our checklist-style schedule breaks down the entire year's worth of 3rd grade homeschool curriculum into manageable weekly segments. This gives you the ultimate flexibility to accelerate on days your student is thriving or pause and review when they need a little extra time.
Absolutely. We know that children rarely learn at a perfectly uniform grade level across every single subject. If you are homeschooling a 3rd grader who reads at a 4th-grade level but needs 2nd-grade math support, you can use our online customizer tool to swap out any item in the kit. You will keep the bulk discounts of the kit tier while ensuring the material perfectly matches your child's current placement.
Not sure if it’s time to move up? Totally normal!
A great place to start is with our Placement Tests. We have complete tests for younger kiddos to show exactly where they are. For older students, you’ll want to focus on the math and language arts sections to get a good feel for their readiness.
Kids are usually ready to jump into the next kit—with maybe a few exceptions. If your child is heading into 3rd grade but places into 2nd-grade math, no problem! You might want to grab the 3rd-grade kit and simply swap out the math.
If a subject didn’t stick last year, now’s your chance to figure out why.
- Maybe your child just missed a few concepts (hello, summer review!).
- Maybe the curriculum didn’t click.
- Maybe math just isn’t his jam (yet).
- Or maybe he needs a little extra support—and that’s okay!
One of the best things about homeschooling? You’re not locked into a one-size-fits-all timeline. You can customize learning to fit your child and help them succeed at their own pace.
Ready to start exploring? We’re here to help every step of the way!
We pick every item in this kit against one standard: is it the best thing we can find for a child this age? At this grade level, the materials that won that test don't carry religious content either way — so the Classic and Nonreligious kits contain the same items. The single difference is the handbook, where the Classic edition's suggested reading list includes Christian titles.
We flag that difference carefully. We serve charter school families who aren't permitted to buy materials containing religious content, so we label anything that carries any — even a reading list tucked inside a handbook. We'd rather over-label than let a family order something their program isn't allowed to buy.
You'll also notice there's no Bible course in the kit. That's deliberate. We believe Bible study is too important to become one more subject to check off — what your family studies should flex with your children's ages, what they're wrestling with, and what your church is walking through this year. A boxed Bible curriculum can't do that. We've written more about how we think about it here: The Bible: It's Not Just Curriculum.
Nope—and that's totally normal!
Here's the deal: Accreditation is for schools, not curriculum. Your local school district might be accredited, but their textbooks aren't. Accreditation looks at things like teacher degrees and classroom hours, not the books or materials being used. And since Timberdoodle kits aren't a school—they're a collection of awesome learning tools—there's nothing to accredit.
If you see a homeschool program claiming to be "accredited," just remember: it's the school that's accredited, not the curriculum.
And don't worry—no state requires homeschool curriculum to be accredited. (Phew!)
What you really want to know is: "Will Timberdoodle meet my state's homeschool requirements?" In most cases, the answer is yes—we meet or beat what's needed! However, every state's rules are a little different, so we recommend checking yours. (We even have a quick cheat sheet to help!)
Still scratching your head? Reach out—we'd love to help you figure it out!
We've been honored with more than 40 awards from top homeschooling resources over the years. We're talking about the Practical Homeschooling Reader Awards, The Old Schoolhouse Excellence in Education Awards, and Cathy Duffy's Top Picks. Our Elementary Curriculum, High School Curriculum, Kindergarten, Middle School Curriculum, and Preschool/Readiness kits have all earned top awards. We've also been recognized for our Boxed Curriculum and even for being Most Unique. These awards are a testament to how much our customers love our kits! Winning them means receiving very high satisfaction ratings from YOU, our amazing homeschooling families. It truly shows that the time and effort we put into creating comprehensive and engaging curriculum pays off!

I am new to homeschooling this year and after a bunch of research we landed on miacademy. A month into it, it was not working. Tried time for learning same thing different font. Finally after lots of research we ordered the curriculum kit for 3rd grade from timberdoodle. It’s been so great- the scheduler makes it easy on me cause I break it down by work per day and my child is engaged and comprehending things. When we just watched videos and did guided notes on other curriculums it wasn’t sticking. I’m thankful to have found timberdoodle and really enjoy what it’s done for my homeschooling family. So now I’ve ordered a second kit for my oldest. I will be ordering the preschool kit for my youngest next year because we love the variety and thought that go into these kits. I’m finally feeling like I can be successful with this. Thank you timberdoodle.

This is our second school year with our elite kits. All of our kids get excited to see those huge boxes arrive (though our UPS delivery person maybe not as much…). The Third Grade Elite Kit did not disappoint. I did not make them wait to try out Gravitrax or Counting Sheep :) but it’s neat to see my son peek through his new books. My son was pretty proud that he gets to start the Mosdos Literature like his older siblings, Gamma Math-U-See is a great way to learn those multiplication facts, and Real Science 4 Kids is always a highlight. The art included in the kit is great, my son couldn’t wait to start. The first day of school included art at his request! What I appreciate most about these kits is the thought that goes into choosing each item. Thanks Timberdoodle!

Timberdoodle has absolutely everything you need to have a well rounded curriculum. Every class has the appropriate materials, and the teacher guides make them easier to put together daily lessons.

So far the language arts Mosdos Press Literature is great. I love that it comes with the textbook, teacher book and workbook. We are using Beast Academy for math (which my daughter loves!) so removed what was included. We did keep the multiplication string keys, such a fun tool. I am not a fan of the Story of the World. It's a very hard read in such a small book- seems dumbed down and emotional. Very much not a text book. The Real Science was kind of a let down too. It just seems like cheap publishing. Hard to look at. I'm just very glad something like this exists to get a jump start into homeschooling.

Timberdoodle is always a winner

We have just began an exciting new journey of a school year using this splendid curriculum. It has allow my child to learn language arts from all angles, really helping him to master English for his age. Math U See’s blocks are the most effective way to teach just about any math concept. The methods used in the curriculum to promote divergent thinking are amazing! History and Science are a bit complex, but if you give your child a chance to digest it and break it down into simpler concepts for them, they can digest it. There is enough hands on items to keep them occupied between complex lessons. After all my research, Timberdoodle is the best all around curriculum provider on the market.

A Great Choice!
Grant H.
I am thrilled with our decision to order a Timberdoodle (custom) curriculum set for our child. We customized a third grade set to match his abilities in each core subject and are so pleased with all of the great art projects, the scheduler, the games, and puzzles! I’ve been homeschooling (and loving it!) for four years already and I was hesitant about a “big box” curriculum because it seemed like mostly new homeschoolers were opting for it. The ability to customize is GREAT and we added more books from our home library; everything has been wonderful for us. So one month in, I ordered another one of my children a custom Timberdoodle curriculum box. We are having a great time so far!

Customizing is Amazing!
Megan G.
Finding Timberdoodle was a game changer for our homeschooling! I am so grateful that they have already done the research to find the best curriculum because finding curriculum that works is so overwhelming and time consuming! I love being able to find everything I need all in one place, and being able to change or delete things that I need or don't need! I appreciate it being non-religious so that we can still get it through our charter-like program! The handbook and scheduler are amazing and I am just so glad that I happened upon Timberdoodle and their customizable curriculum kits! Thank you!

Love to be able to customize kits!!

I love how easy it is to customize the curriculum kits! Especially how it helps with making sure the core subjects are covered. The ease of substituting an item for various related subject options is very helpful!

I love this kit and the way I was able to switch out products that my son has already mastered or changed what my son was learning based on his interest and abilities.
